Thune sent his letter to Facebook asking for more information on the Trending Topics module earlier this month.įacebook outlined a number of changes it is implementing to try and remedy that potential problem, including expanded oversight of the review team, refresher training for review team staff members, an expanded help center so that users have a better understanding of the module, and updated terminology in its guidelines.įacebook is also eliminating its list of external websites "to identify, validate or assess the importance of particular topics." It is also removing the ability to assign an “importance level” to a topic through assessment of the topic’s prominence on the top-10 list of news outlets," according to a company blog post, written by Facebook general counsel Colin Stretch. In a letter responding to Senate Commerce Committee Chairman John Thune (R-S.D.), Facebook said its internal review "revealed no evidence of systematic political bias in the selection or prominence of stories included in the Trending Topics feature," adding, however, that "our investigation could not fully exclude the possibility of isolated improper actions or unintentional bias in the implementation of our guidelines or policies."
